Great Simple Fondant Recipe

Tech Cakes Google Chrome Cake 03For all of you looking to create your own iPhone, Blackberry, or Pre cake, here is a fast and simple fondant recipe that will help you get started. We used it on our exclusive Google Chrome cake and it turned out great!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
  • 2 pounds confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS
1. In a large bowl, stir together the shortening and corn syrup. Mix in the salt and vanilla flavoring, then gradually mix in the confectioners’ sugar until it is a stiff dough. If you are using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment. Otherwise, knead by hand. If the dough is sticky, knead in more confectioners’ sugar until it is smooth. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
2. To use, roll out on a clean surface that has been dusted with confectioners’ sugar until it is 1/8 inch thick or thinner if you can. Drape over frosted and chilled cakes and smooth the sides down, or cut into strips to make bows and other decorations.

TIPS

  • Be sure to put a layer of frosting on the cake first so that the fondant sits smoothly on the cake.
  • The fondant is much easier to work with when it’s cold, so keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to cut it.
  • If you want to cut shapes out, roll the fondant between two sheets of wax paper and then use a sharp knife to cut out the shapes.

Tech Cakes Microsoft Windows Vista

Windows Vista Magazine celebrated the one year birthday of Vista with this custom designed cake. As with many of the cakes featured here, it wasn’t long before it was gone:

Within about 30 seconds of setting eyes on it, we devoured it.
